Emancipation Day - 2011
Good Morning!
As I look out into the sea of colour, charisma, and character, I think Oh what a beautiful people we are; I think of what a blessed Nation we are, to be standing here together, side by side, hand in hand, in commemoration and celebration of an event that has touched us all, and has impacted on our generations. We stand together in commemoration of the 173rd anniversary of Emancipation in our nation and the 19th year of the Emancipation Support Committee's dedicated production of this festival.
Our commemoration this year is even more momentous, as we celebrate within the context of 2011 being declared by the United Nations as the International Year of People of African Descent.

Caribbean Regional Colloquium
A very pleasant good morning to one and all and may I take this opportunity to, on behalf of the Government and people of Trinidad and Tobago, to warmly welcome you to our country.
Today's event is indeed a historic one for my country and as I reflect on its importance for our region, I am reminded of the very true saying that the women of today are the thoughts of their mothers and grandmothers, embodied, and made alive. They are active, capable, determined and bound to win. They have one thousand generations back of them ... Millions of women; dead and gone are speaking through us today.
And their voices, so long silenced, are now shouting out that finally, women are at a point where we can alter the course of Caribbean political history.
For too many years in our world's history, even though they make up half the population, women and girls have endured discrimination in most societies for thousands of years.
